Golf News w/c 2/11/09
Friday, November 6th, 2009Fellow Members,
Welcome to a new week of golf, albeit a little late for which I apologise, we won’t even mention the weather. November is only five days old and so much is happening it makes your head spin. First things first, today it was my privelige to drive Phil Dean to Campbelltown for his treatment and as we all know he has a long way to go but his improvement since he first took ill is quite remarkable, no doubt aided by both Kerrie’s and Phil’s good humour and positive outlook, truly inspirational. Over fifty members responded to the request for drivers to take Phil to Cambelltown which only emphasises what a great club we belong to.
David Boyd has posted the figures for September and the year to date which show we are moving ahead. The figures are encouraging but leave no room for complacency as we still need to improve our cash flow to remain viable. There are many ways to do this and one of the easiest is to improve our competition fields each Wednesday and Saturday for the men and Tuesdays and Thursdays for our ladies. Our visitor numbers are improving due in no small part to Tony White’s iniatives. We have a showcase course in near perfect condition as every visitor I have spoken to confirms but we need to do more.
Melbourne Cup Day attracted a field of 90 odd (figuratively not personally) players who enjoyed a wonderful days golf even though the weather was a little warm (at last). the Edwards team were victorious with 74 points over the Campbells’ team with 71 points on a count back. Then 116 punters sat down to a lovely smorgasbord lunch, watched the Cup, told each other lies about golf and the horses we should have backed. Thanks to our ladies for doing all the organisation, nobody does it better.
We have 62 confirmed professionals to play in our inaugural PGA Legends Pro-Am on November 17th. To make it a full card we have positions for186 amateurs to make up 62 teams of four. There are plenty of places left so if you haven’t put your entry form in please do it now! I have had quite a few players say they won’t play because they are not good enough, that is not so, if you have a genuine handicap be it 1 or 36 you are good enough. These pros are all seniors and are a lot more laid back than younger pros who are still trying to make a name for themselve, believe me you will have a great day so why not make up your own team of 3 and enjoy the experience of having a round of golf with a senior PGA professional. Your entry fee of $65 includes lunch.
November 21st is Legacy Day which is always a major event in our calendar. Major General Jeffries and Major General Stevens will be playing, and with many different events to participate in and a good day is assured.
Our Club Championships are coming down to the pointy end with some epic matches already having been played. Frank Eggert and Sam Hunt went right down to the wire with Sam claiming the match on the 36th hole 1up after Frank led 1 up on the18th.
After consultation with the rules Guru at NSW golf a decision has been made to allow swingers in all 2BBB events. In their view a 2 ball is not a real game so we can do what we want. Handicapping can still be done but only by our club handicapper so you still have to be nice to Mr. Dash.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK
Why are the words “may” “should” and “must” so important in applying the rules of golf?
Answer to last weeks Question;
Can a player place a club on the ground to aid in his alignment?
Yes, provided the club is removed before playing the stroke. Otherwise a breach of Rule 8-2a would occur
Until next week “GOOD GOLFING”
David Stanley
Captain.
