Golf News w/c 2/11/09

Friday, November 6th, 2009

Fellow Members,

Welcome to a new week of golf, albeit a little late for which I apologise, we won’t even mention the weather. November is only five days old and so much is happening it makes your head spin. First things first, today it was my privelige to drive Phil Dean to Campbelltown for his treatment and as we all know he has a long way to go but his improvement since he first took ill is quite remarkable, no doubt aided by both Kerrie’s and Phil’s good humour and positive outlook, truly inspirational. Over fifty members responded to the request for drivers to take Phil to Cambelltown which only emphasises what a great club we belong to.

David Boyd has posted the figures for September and the year to date which show we are moving ahead. The figures are encouraging but leave no room for complacency as we still need to improve our cash flow to remain viable. There are many ways to do this and one of the easiest is to improve our competition fields each Wednesday and Saturday for the men and Tuesdays and Thursdays for our ladies. Our visitor numbers are improving due in no small part to Tony White’s iniatives. We have a showcase course in near perfect condition as every visitor I have spoken to confirms but we need to do more.

Melbourne Cup Day attracted a field of 90 odd (figuratively not personally) players who enjoyed a wonderful days golf even though the weather was a little warm (at last). the Edwards team were victorious with 74 points over the Campbells’ team with 71 points on a count back. Then 116 punters sat down to a lovely smorgasbord lunch, watched the Cup, told each other lies about golf and the horses we should have backed. Thanks to our ladies for doing all the organisation, nobody does it better.

We have 62 confirmed professionals to play in our inaugural PGA Legends Pro-Am on November 17th. To make it a full card we have positions for186 amateurs to make up 62 teams of four. There are plenty of places left so if you haven’t put your entry form in please do it now! I have had quite a few players say they won’t play because they are not good enough, that is not so, if you have a genuine handicap be it 1 or 36 you are good enough. These pros are all seniors and are a lot more laid back than younger pros who are still trying to make a name for themselve, believe me you will have a great  day so why not make up your own team of 3 and enjoy the experience of having a round of golf with a senior PGA professional. Your entry fee of $65 includes lunch.

November 21st is Legacy Day which is always a major event in our calendar. Major General Jeffries and Major General Stevens will be playing, and with many different events to participate in and a good day is assured.

Our Club Championships are coming down to the pointy end with some epic matches already having been played. Frank Eggert and Sam Hunt went right down to the wire with Sam claiming the match on the 36th hole 1up after Frank led 1 up on the18th.

After consultation with the rules Guru at NSW golf a decision has been made to allow swingers in all 2BBB events. In their view a 2 ball is not a real game so we can do what we want. Handicapping can still be done but only by our club handicapper so you still have to be nice to Mr. Dash.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Why are the words “may” “should” and “must” so important in applying the rules of golf?

Answer to last weeks Question;

Can a player place a club on the ground to aid in his alignment?

Yes, provided the club is removed before playing the stroke. Otherwise a breach of Rule 8-2a would occur

Until next week “GOOD GOLFING”

Fellow Members,

A week of perfect golf weather until Sunday when our pros arrived to play their “Total Maritime Logistics” sponsored skins game. Steady rain started to fall and continued apart from a couple of small breaks right through the round. Breakfast of bacon and egg rolls was served on the terrace and most of us managed to enjoy this before the rain arrived.

Phil Dean is making remarkable progress and commences his radiotherapy this week so an advance thank you to all the volunteer drivers.

GOLF NEWS

Wednesday October 21st - Single Stableford - CCR 69 - 59 players.

Winner - Col Collins (31) 39 points

R/U Bob Constable (22) 38 points c/b

Eagles Nest - Not Won

NTP 11th - David Stanley

NTP 14th - Pasquale Timores

Saturday October 24th - 3 Person Ambrose- CCR n/a - 75 players

Winners - Nathan Bradbury/Chris Boggs/ Corin Allen (v) (5 1/2) nett 53 1/2 with 5 birdies on the front nine and 5 birdies on the back nine. Well done and not a handicapped event.

R/U Frank Eggert/Ned Simms/Sam Hunt (3 5/6) nett 54 1/6.

If you came in with 59 or 60 and thought you must at least get a ball - tough.

Eagles Nest - Craig Langby who won 2 balls and then donated them back to the club so the Eagles Nest next Saturday will become 3 balls. Thanks Craig!

NTP 11th - Mike Klopper

NTP 14th - Mick Cooper - these guys start at 6.30am so they obviously can’t sleep or get kicked out of bed, so I guess we should be pleased for them when they win, even if it is only a golf ball.

The final eight for each of the grades for our Club Championships have now been decided with Bill Metcalf beating Ian MacKenzie 3 and 2 for “B” grade while the final spot in “C” grade went to Bob Young over Eddie Jones 3 up.

Sunday October 25th- “Total Maritime Logistics” Pro Skins Day. $100 per hole and $200 to our charity, Highlands SES for any par3 if the pros could land their ball within a 7′ circle of the pin.

Larry Canning did this on the 11th for a birdie. At the end of the game Bob Kemp the CEO of TML much to the delight of Alan Hunt and his crew doubled this amount to $400. The total return to the Highlands SES for the day was over $1000 which to my mind considering the inclement weather was a good return.

So to the Golf -  Meet the players -

Tony White - BGC Pro. DOG & DOO, Multi Tourism award winner and Bon Vivant -

 Robert Kennedy -  Mt. Broughton DOG, small in stature but can he play golf! -

Larry Canning -  Legends senior Touring Pro, Man about town, National Radio Personality, - Raconteur and Journalist (never lets the truth get in the way of a good story)

Kevin Kenny -  Irish touring pro, 2006 rookie of the year, all round good bloke - should be an Aussie and I’m sure he will be when he doesn’t need a translator.

Steve Anderson was our silver tongued Master of Ceremonies.

Play commenced in steady rain which didn’t really let up until the 16th when the sun briefly shone through then closed in again. Despite this those diehards who followed the players for all the 18 holes were treated to some scintallating golf and some shots that made us feel better.

Holes 1 to 4 were halved leaving a $500 skin on the 5th which was won by RK when he pitched to under a metre for a birdie3, he then won the 6th with a par.

Larry Canning won the 7th and Kevin Kenny won the 8th putting his hybrid 2nd onto the green then two putts for a birdie 4. Something that most of us do each week (I wish).

the 9th was halved, leaving RK with $600, KK and LC with $100 each. Our Tony at this stage was keeping his powder dry for a late surge.

KK won the $200 skin on the 10th with another birdie.

LC put his tee shot inside the circle on the 11th to put $400 in the SES coffers and and pocketed $100 with a birdie.

RK won the 12th.

KK won the 13th putting his tee shot onto the green, two putts for a bird (where are you Tony!)

14th went to LC with a birdie.

15th was halved and LC picked up $200 with a win on the 16th.

17 and 18 were halved leaving $200 for a 100 metre shootout NTP on the 18th. Showing what a gentleman and great host he is, having let the visitors pocket all the loot to this stage, Tony, letting them know who really was the king of BGC won the shootout with consumate ease, pitching within centimetres of the hole while the others couldn’t even find the green. To all the BGC members Tony you are still the champ!

This should not go without comment; Ashley Southon in the raffle won a parcel of his mothers favourite wine which he without hesitation swapped it for a PERSONAL playing lesson with our pro The age of chivalry passed away on this night. Ash I hope you called into Dan Murphy’s on the way home.

COMING EVENTS

Senior Legends Pro Am is on November 17th. The organisers have promised us 50 pros will participate in the event which means we need 150 players to fill out the card. BGC members have exclusive bookings until November 1st when the bookings will be thrown open to all golfers. Don’t miss out on this the inaugural Legends event and play alongside some of our leading players of yesteryear - BOOK NOW.

As a Club fundraiser Erich and Gillian Brosell are throwing open their garden and art collection this Sunday the 1st of November. Light refreshments will be served. Ring the office or check the leader board for details. Their garden is a showpiece and they have an extensive art collection to view. Thank you Erich and Gillian for this generous offer.

Don’t forget Melbourne Cup day golf and lunch next Tuesday. This is one of the “don’ miss” events of the year

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Can a player place a club on the ground to aid in his alignment?

Answer to last weeks question;

Penalty - For a breach of Rule 4-4a or b, regardless of number of excess clubs carried;

Match Play - At the conclusion of the hole at which the breach is discovered, the state of the match is adjusted by deducting one hole for each hole at which a breach occurred; Maximum deduction per round - Two Holes.

Stroke Play - Two strokes for each hole at which any breach occurred; Maximum penalty per round - Four strokes

Stableford - Two points for every hole where a breach occurred with a maximum of 4 points.

Until next week - GOOD GOLFING.

Fellow Members,

For your information Phil Dean is back in Bowral in the Private Hospital and is improving daily. However he still has a long way to go. He has to undergo an intensie program of Radio Therapy for the next six weeks so we are calling for drivers to assist in transporting him to Campbelltown over this period. Whatever assistance you can offer please contact Geoffrey Meere on 4861 4048 who is organizing a roster of drivers to help ease the pressure on Kerry and Phil. An email has gone out to all members so this will serve as a reminder.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK.

No. The repair of spike marks that might assist the player in his subsequent play of the hole would constitute a breach of rule16-1c. (look it up)

Until next week “GOOD GOLFING” and I hope to see you on Sunday.

Golf News w/c 12.10.09

Sunday, October 11th, 2009

Fellow Members,

Another week of pretty ordinary golf weather, Wednesday was cold with a few showers during the day but no wind to speak of which I guess accounted for the relatively small field of 63 players.

Saturday, until later in the day was reasonably mild with the sun coming through and very little wind, the last four or five groups got drenched when some late heavy showers came through. I do apologise to the players who experienced the calm conditions, how we can expect you to play good golf in this abnormal weather I don’t know, as I said previously the later players were fortunate when conditions got back to normal with the heavy rain and strong winds and some of the leading scores reflected this to be the case.

Saturday’s event to my mind is the most important event in our calendar, our first qualifying round of the club championships and the October monthly medal yet we could only field a field of 69 players.  I find this very disappointing and in my view devalues the club championships. Our course is in superb condition and the greens are excellent considering the heavy coring so no excuse there.  We have relatively few players in “A” division and most of those turned out, however in “B” and “C” division, where most of our players reside, the turn out was poor. How can our winners claim to be the champions when when they are competing against a relatively small percentage of eligible players. Sure the weather over the past few week has left a lot to be desired and there will always be an unavoidable number of players who can’t play or qualify but this is YOUR club championship; something worth competing for.  Even if you can’t qualify it was still the October Monthly Medal.

Here endeth the first lesson!

GOLF RESULTS

Wednesday 7th October - Single Stableford - CCR 70 - Number of players 63.

Winner - John Mulholland (9) 39 points

R/U - Alan Turpie (19) 38 points. Oh dear another stroke gone and just before the Club Championships.

Eagles Nest - Jim Dickson - 5 balls. Welcome back Jim and I really appreciated your call all the way from Eastern Europe for the Captains Dinner.

NTP 11th - Alan Lindsay

NTP 14th - Fred Sewell. Used a 5 iron this time Fred?

Congratulations to all the above.

Saturday 10th October - Monthly Medal and First Qualifying Round for the Club Championships “A, B, & C” Division.

Medal Winner “A” Division - Craig Langby (6) nett 66. A stroke gone there Craig.

R/U - Sam Hunt (11) nett 68. After hibernating for the Winter Sam you are back to (10)

“B” Division Winner - John Cummins - (19) nett 63 with an O/B in this score, lucky you only lost 2 strokes John.

R/U - Harry Caust (15) 68 nett - Sorry you put in an NTQ card Harry.

“C” Division Winner - Doug Stalley (20) nett 70. An oldie but a goodie!

R/U - Peter Girven (30) nett 71

Best Scratch - Craig Langby 72.

Eagles Nest - Ned Simms 19 balls.

NTP 11th - Nathan Bradbury

NTP 14th - Ned Simms - Take note Fred Ned used a 9 iron!!!!

Congratulations to all the above and to those who lost strokes, rest easy, you play out the Champioships on your original handicaps.

COMING EVENTS

Next Saturday is the second qualifying stroke round for the Club Championships. Top eight scratch scores over both rounds qualify in each Division.

October 25th -  “Total Container Logistics” - Pro Skins Day featuring;

                         Our own and last years winner Tony White

                         NSW 2007 Club Pro Champion Robert Kennedy

                         Current Seniors Touring Pro Larry Canning

                         2006 Rookie of the Year Kevin Kenney.

This will be a wonderful day of golf and should not be missed, supporting our Berrima Search and Rescue Squad -SES. Breakfast on the Terrace and “What’s in your Bag” interview with each pro by our MC for the day Steve Anderson. Breakfast 9.00am hit off 11.00am, Smorgasbord and presentation approx 3.30pm.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Can spike marks be repaired on a green?

Answer to last weeks question;

Before a match play competition, a player may practise on the competition course unless prohibited from doing so by the committee - see the note to rule 7-1. However in stroke play, a competitor is not permitted to practise on the competition or test the surface of any putting green unless permitted to do so by the committee.

Until next week, GOOD GOLFING, and I hope to see a big field this Saturday!

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

Fellow Members,

The good news is that Phil Dean is showing signs of improvement although his situation is stll very serious. Hopefully this improvement will continue. I know I speak for all members that our thoughts are with Kerry and her family in the hope that Phil will make a recovery and we will see him back on the course in due time.

The weather has been pretty ordinary for golf, the wind has abated some what but nobody would dare complain about the rain.

From a field of 94, In spite of the weather we had 72 starters with teams from Manly, Royal Sydney and Appin participating, 96 attended the BBQ of delicious steaks  cooked by Tony Capps and wonderful salads provided by our own staff. A day filled with goodwill and good humour a true indication of the spirit of BGC. Congratulations Neville!

COMING EVENTS

This Saturday is the first round of our Club Championships, come one come all this is the big event of the year. FYI we are playing our divisions as outlayed by the AGU for handicaps. These are;

“A” Division 0 to 12

“B” Division 13 to 18

“C” Division 19 to 36.

The format is; two qualifying rounds of gross scores then the best eight in each division play knockout match play with the finals to be played on Sunday the 6th of December. Please note the change of date for the finals. This has been brought about by us securing the Rotary Golf Day (previously played at the Highlands GC) which has to be played on November 29th. Over 100 golfers play in this event so this is our chance to secure this huge event on a yearly basis. I hope this will not inconvenience any of our members.

So the format will be;

Qualifying rounds October 10th and 17th.

Quarter Finals BY November 8th

Semi Finals BY November 22nd

Finals ON December 6th - “A” Division 36 holes “B & C” Division 18 holes.

Players must be able to conform with these dates.

An update on our Pro Skins event on October 25th and The Southern Highlands Legends Pro-Am will be available next week. AND PLEASE CHECK THE LEADER BOARD IN THE CLUB HOUSE.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK.

May a player practise on the competition course?

Answer to last weeks question;

Although under rule 6-2b a competitor must ensure that his handicap is recorded on his score card before it is returned to the Committee, it does not stipulate where the handicap shall be recorded; as long as it appears somewhere on the card, the competitor has fulfilled his duty.

Until next week “Good Golfing”

Golf News w/c 28/09/09

Thursday, October 1st, 2009

Fellow members,

Who can remember a worse week weather wise for golf. Gale force winds, hail, sleet, rain, tsunamis, you name it we had it. In spite of all this your ground staff provided us all with an immculately turned out golf course, and during future rounds if you see any of Damien and his crew please tell them what a great job they are doing.  We are quick to criticize so let’s be as quick to praise as well.

GOLF RESULTS

Wednesday 23/09/09 - Single Stableford.

In spite of the weather 36 intrepid (crazy) souls turned out to contest this event. Winners were;

John Mulholland (9) 36 points c/b

r/u Jim Phillips (11) 36 points

NTP 11th John Mulholland

NTP 14th Jim Phillips.

The Eagles Nest was not won.

Saturday 26/09/09 - Boxmor Trophy (Captains vs Presidents Teams).

If you thought Wednesday’s weather was bad, Saturday was diabolical. Rain, sleet, hail, snow ? and a howling 70km gale that just didn’t let up, which to lesser souls would have had them cowering indoors sheltering from the elements. Showing that indefatigable spirit that categorizes  members of BGC 87 players turned out to contest this popular event. I lay the blame for the shocking conditions clearly at the feet of our President. So worried about defeat was he that it was so easy to flick the switch on the weather machine from warm and balmy (as I had it set) to absolutely bloody awful. Anyway these underhand tactics worked with the Presidents mob winning the day 13 matches to 9.This gives the Presidents team an overall margin of 14 matches to 12. Well played but just wait until next year. Having said this, in fact, the scores in the conditions were quite remakable with no less than 37 teams equaling or breaking par and 13 teams scoring 40+.

Winners were - Presidents team 13 matches, captains team 9 matches.

 John Conolly (16) and Don Barker  (17) 46 points.

r/u Doug Ruttan (29) and Alan Turpie (20) 45 points.

All winning teams won a ball each.

Eagles Nest was not won.

NTP 11th Don Barker.

NTP 14th Bill Metcalf.

The day of golf was followed by a dinner attended by 95 people where the Captain graciously conceded defeat and presented the President with the Boxmor Trophy. The meal was delicious and our thanks to Barbara Sinden. The service by Trudy, Jeanette, Michelle and Craig behind the bar was excellent and helped make the night such a success. The table decoration and presentation of the room by v/p Maggie and her team was in a woid, supoib.

COMING EVENTS

Saturday 3rd October - W H Friend Trophy - Par.

Sunday 4th October - Bowral Teams Event 11.00am Shotgun Start ( in my last blog I andvised the Shotgun Start was 12.00 noon, wrong, the correct time is 11.00am) followed by a smorgasbord and presentation.

We now have a sponsor for our Pro Skins event on the 25th October. final details next week. This will be a day not to be missed, put it in your diary NOW!

QUESTION OF THE WEEK.

Answer to last weeks question;

In the absence of strong evidence to suggest an “x-out” or “refurbished” ball does not conform to the Rules, it is permissible for such a ball to be used. In most cases “practice” balls are simply listed conforming balls that have been stamped”PRACTICE”. Such balls may be used even where the committee has adopted the condition that the ball the player uses must be named on the list of conforming Golf Balls

This weeks Question;

Must a player enter his handicap in the box provided on the score card?

Until next week,

GOOD GOLFING

Captain.

Golf News w/c 21/09/09

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

Fellow Members,

Welcome to another week of outstanding golf on the Premier Golf course on the Southern Highlands. Our greens had their first cut since the coring on the Wednesday the 16th and I apologise to players that this took place during our competition round, however our greens staff had no alternative as the greens have to be dry so we get an optimum cut and there is no sand picked up that can damage the mower blades. I would ask all players to to be patient in the interest of having first class greens in the very near future, it will be worth the minor inconvenience and the wait.

GOLF RESULTS

Wednesday 16th September - 2BBB Stableford.

It is pleasing to see that in spite of the green renovations 78 players took part in this event and under any circumstances the scores were outstanding. Warren Ryan (23) and Phil Ridell (25) returned an amazing score of 55 points. Warren appeared on the card 13 times and in spite of the conditions attracted the attention of the Lord High Executioner and lost 4 strokes. Phil escaped this time. Runners up were Ian McKenzie (16) and Jim Phillips (11) congratulations to both pairs. In fact only three teams scored less than 36 points and the lowest score for balls was 44 points, not bad on a course under renovation. The eagles nest remained intact. NTP on the 11th was won by Pasquale Timores,  NTP on the 14th went to Jeff Spender. Incidentally Warren & Phil,s card will be framed and take pride of place beside the +16 par score on the mantlepiece over the fireplace.

Saturday 19th September - Monthly Medal Stroke - Max Allen Trophy.

Another solid field of 79 players contested this Trophy event.  Winners were;

Max Allen Trophy - Best Nett Score - Richard lavender(17)  61

(A) Alex Nicholson (12) nett 69 c/b

     r/u Craig Langby (6) nett 69

(B) Richard Lavender (17) nett 61

     r/u Ron Campbell (14) nett 66

(C) Graham Connolly (25) nett 64

     r/u Des Perkins (21) nett 66

Best Scratch Score - Craig Langby 75.

The Eagles Nest remained intact. NTP winners were 11th David McGinnes and 14th Neville Ridge.

Congratulations to all the above players.

A couple of notable acievements during the round were Alex Nicholson, winner “A” division, shooting under his age off the stick and Des Perkins, r/u in “C” division, completing the round without damaging any of the local wildlife.

COMING EVENTS

This Saturday September 26th the Boxmor Trophy day, Presidents Team vs Captains Team. Could be the club event of the year. At close of bookings over 90 players have registered to play and 95 booked for the dinner. Rivalry is running high with cross accusations of team stacking and other forms skulduggery rife. The books have it even money and I’m sure the stewards will be keeping a close eye on any sudden plunges on the Presidents Team. Armed guards will be posted at all score entry points and our DOG y DOO is bringing along his trained killer dog for personal safety. Although the Captains team should start favourite with his fine array of debonair, good looking and athletic ex- captains and players, at the peak of their form, making up his team. Fr.Sean Cullen has also asked his boss to “bless” us with a win. Really Grant do you and your mob even want to turn up? Why not just come to the dinner?

Monday 28th September - Summer Eclectic Starts.

Saturday 3rd October - W H Friend Trophy - Par.

Sunday 4th October - Bowral Teams Shield Mixed Event - Shotgun Start 12.00 noon, followed by a presentation and Smorgasbord. Daylight saving starts this day.

Saturday 10th October - Medal Day and opening day of the Club Championships.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK.

Answer to last weeks question - (a) Yes (b) No. However, lead tape that becomes detached from the club in the normal course of play may be replaced (Rule 4-3a).

Can I use an “x-out”, “refurbished” or “practice” ball to play a round of golf?

Until next week - GOOD GOLFING.

Golf News w/c 15/09/09

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

Fellow Members,

Welcome to another week of golf at the premier golf club in the Southern Highlands. Our greens ronovations are progressing at a satisfactory rate with our course superintendent acquiring a set vibrating rollers that fit onto our greens mowers and serve to push the sand down into the coring at a quicker rate thereby shortening their rehabilitation time. I would again like to thank Damien, Nathan, Mat and Nathan (jnr.) for their dedication in keeping our course in first class condition and a pleasure to play on.

GOLF RESULTS

Wednesday 9/9/09 2BBB Open Day.

68 players including 5 visitors took part in the days activities. With our two putt rule in place there was not one minus score recorded, obviously the handicapper had the day off. Bruce Windybank and Alan Turpie with +12 won the day from Bob Constable and David Farthing +11 c/b from Don Barker and Doug Ruttan +11. Congratulations to those players, even with the two putt rule these scores are exceptional.

Saturday 12/09/09 Redmond Dalton Trophy - single stableford.

A field of 74 players with 11 visitors including John Dalton of the Redmond Dalton family. He didn’t take out the family trophy but did win a ball with a creditable 36 points. The greens were in  good enough condition to lift the two putt rule. Anyone critical of the condition of the greens should note that the top 16 scores equaled par or better. Our winner for the day was Peter Girven (32) now (30) with 42 points on a countback from Daniel Gauchat (23) now  (22), congratulations to Peter and Daniel. The Eagles Nest was not won, NTP 11th Kevin Ferrari, NTP 14th Fred Sewell who tells me he used a 5 iron this week as against his 4 iron the previous Saturday. Amazing how success breeds confidence. 20 balls were in the comp. going down to the top 4 on 35 points. The only disappointing feature for my part was that for the presentation our members were almost out numbered by our visitors. I know that we have other things to do after golf on a Saturday however this was embarrasing particularly as We had John Dalton there to say a few words and present the trophy. We process the scores as quickly as we can as they come,  I am open to suggestion if anyone has a solution to this problem.

Sunday’s Gala Day with over 80 players was from all accounts a roaring success, so once again my sincere thanks to our ladies who organised the day. I don’t have any details to hand at the moment so shall report more fully next week. I can’t delay my post any longer, Franks waiting1

COMING EVENTS

Tomorrow is another open day a 2BBB Stableford.

Saturday 19th is Medal Day for the Max Allen Trophy. I anticipate a large field for this popular trophy.

The Boxmor Trophy ( President vs Captain Teams) match and dinner entries close on the 21st. If you haven’t already replied to your invitation please do so as we have to publsh the draw on Tuesday the 22nd.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Answer to last weeks question “Does a sigle player have any standing on the golf course?” The etiquette section suggests that, unless otherwise determined by the committee, prioity on the course is determined by a group’s pace of play,and the term “group” includes a single player. Therefore, a slow group should give wat, where possible, to a faster group, and single golfers should have the same rights as all other players.

This week. Can I apply lead tape to a clubhead or shaft (a) before the start of a round; and (b) during a round?

Until next week “GOOD GOLFING’

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

Fellow Members,

Welcome to a new week with our greens renovations well underway. I will be making a decision on the two putt rule after consultation with our course superintendent for Wednesdays Open Day 2BBB par event however the rule will not apply for the Redman Dalton Trophy this Saturday. The greens will not be 100% but should be puttable so I ask for your patience for the next couple of weeks.

Wednesday’s single stableford event saw a field of 60 players battle the green renovations with the two putt rule with Graham Gates (26) winning the sheep station with 44 points, Mike Klopper (24) was runner up winning two sheep stations with 42 points. NTP on the 11th went to Graham Connolly and the 14th to Fred Sewell with remarkable 4 iron shot which wasn’t visible to those waiting on the 15th tee until the ball ran onto the green and stopped 60 cms from the hole. Amazing control. Craig Langby (6) had 39 points and didn’t invoke the two putts on any hole. Not bad considering the state of the greens.

Saturday’s single stableford was won by Graham Connolly (26) with 43 points. Runner up Peter Watson (26) with 42 points. If anyone had any doubts about the importance of putting no score under 40 points won a ball. Not that I am implying the two putt rule was used by any of the winners! NTP on the 11th went to Michael Brown and on the 14th to Warwick Kiernan. On a beautiful spring day in the Highlands we could only muster a field of 52 players which taking into account the state of the greens and Father’s day on Sunday is very disappointing.

Neither of these events were handicapped so the winners can rest easy.

COMING EVENTS.

This Saturday the 12th is the Redman Dalton Trophy, single stableford. This trophy has been running since 1982 and is currently held by Ralph Polglase. We should be able to have a strong field to contest this event.

Every one of our golfing members (6 day, visiting & full) will be receiving, or have already received, an invitation to play in the Boxmor Trophy event (Presidents Team vs Captains Team) on the 26th of September and the dinner afterwards. This match and dinner have in the past been so popular it is now a club tradition and I look forward to having a full field.

The Bowral Team Shield will be played on October 4th and Neville Ridge is holding over 60 paid entries from visiting clubs so if you can play and haven’t entered do so now. This is a 4 person mixed team event comprising 2 ladies and 2 men in each team. Current holders are Pam and Don Barker and Robyn and David McGinnes.

GENERAL NEWS

We have a lot of single playing members who feel isolated when they can’t secure a partner to play in our mixed events.  At our last M&G meeting a motion was passed, in response to a letter we received, effective immediately, all mixed evenys apart from Championship and Trophy events will now be mixed/medley events and will not preclude any golfing member from participating.

Our local rule regarding preferred lies on the closely mown areas of the course has now been removed.

If anyone knows of a player who has not played for some time please go out of your way to invite them to come back and play a round. I know it has been a long cold winter but small fields generally are of some concern.

Sorry Frank this should have been out yesterday but a thunderstorm temporarily put me out of action.

Question of the Week.

Does a single player have any standing on the golf course?

Until next week good golfing.

Thursday august 20th, 2009,

Fellow Members,

Welcome to another week of beautiful weather on the Perstige Golf Course of the Southern Highlands. Well OK Monday was a bit ordinary but the rest of the week in a “woid,supoib”!

GOLF NEWS

Congratulations to our recent competition winners.

Wednesday 12/08/09 Single Stableford.

Peter Keys (20) 37 points c/b

R/U Tony Hobson (16) 37 points

Saturday 15/08/09 Morning vs Afternoon 2BBBB Stableford

Overall winners the Afternoon Players 555 to 545 points which goes to prove a glass of red wine is not only good for the heart it improves the golf swing as well.

Individual Winners,

Mike Klopper (24) Neville Ridge (13) 45 points c/b ( Morning)

R/U Brian Lamb (18) Ross Barter (18) 45 points (Afternoon)

58 players (disappointing) with a shotgun start had a most enjoyable day, and discovered some fellow members they had never seen before so the event was a success on both counts. Congratulations to Fred Sewell who instigated this competition three years ago with the idea of getting all the golfers to meet each other in the club house at the same time per medium of a shotgun start. Well done Fred it has done a lot to bring all our players closer together.

Wednesday 19/08/09 Wednesday Stroke Trophy - Final Round

Overall Winner - With the best nett score over the four rounds;

Jim Phillips (11) 284

R/U Brian Lamb (17) 288

Round Four Winner;

David Boyd (15) nett 64

R/U Peter Edwards ( 20) nett 66

David had three double bogeys in his round of 79, so what could it have been?

Both gentlemen have been visited by the happy handicapper. David is now off 13 and Peter 19. Well played to you both.

COURSE NEWS

Don’t forget the green renovations start on the 31st. The two putt rule (optional) will prevail so please keep playing.

The clearing work behind the 9th tee is purely cosmetic there is no ulterior motive! It is just to clear out a lot of the rubbish and noxious weeds that have been growing wild.

Preferred lies on the  fairways will be kept on for a little while longer. This is to protect the course, not the golfer.

COMING EVENTS

Please not that due to circumstances beyond our control the Bradman Golf Day scheduled for the 28th of August has been posponed until late January/early February 2010. Those members who have booked and paid should contact Michelle at the Bradman Museum re your refund.

The Bradman Dinner is still on Thursday night the 27th. If you want to attend I would suggest you book now as there are only a few places left.

Most importantly don’t forget the Captains Trophy and Dinner on Saturday the 29th of August.

Until next week,

Good Golfing,

David Stanley

Captain.
