WATTLE DAY

The History of Wattle Day at Bowral Golf Club

Prior to 2013 Open Day called “The Over 50’s Day” was played usually around the end of July / early August.

It was pointed out to the then Committee that some of our ladies did not qualify for the event due to their younger age.

This event was subsequently renamed “WATTLE DAY” and was held on the nearest Thursday to the 1st August. This event was in line with evidence in “A Celebration of WATTLE Australia’s National Emblem” when author Eileen Newell told of her memories at Bowral Primary School describing the Golden Bloom in August.

Thank you to Pam Barker for this short note on the history of Wattle Day.

WATTLE DAY IT’S A WRAP!

Well, the weather gods weren’t very kind to us this year.

We had 54 women registered to play in the event from a total of 11 different clubs.

Unfortunately, we just had too much rain on the Wednesday night and Thursday morning and we were left with no option but to close the course.

Golf days such as these require a huge amount of planning by the Committee and the support of many members of the club. To this end, we are so lucky to have some very generous members. Thank you to the many members who donated gifts for the raffle, goods for the bake table and food for the morning tea.

The Committee did an amazing job I thank them all for their generosity of time and effort.

The staff in the Club House and of course our wonderful Matt from the Pro Shop were once again stand out champions.

This was Robby Stephenson’s first experience of a women’s function at the club and I would like to thank Robby for his support on the day. The vouchers given out to the players were very popular and meant that we had no refunds paid out.

To everyone who stayed at the club I hope you enjoyed the impromptu activities.

To Matt Spowart - a very big thank you for your very generous donation of the Ping Putter. We had some fun with the putting competition. Unfortunately, the old hickory putter beat all the finalists so I think we will see another putting competition coming up very soon!

The Trivia was a bit of fun also and I thank Pam for donating the golf balls we gave a way as the prizes for the different sections.

Lunch was very nice and it was unfortunate that many players had decided to head home once the golf was cancelled.

Although we did not play golf we have had a lot of positive feedback from members and from many of our visitors.

For a Golf Day with NO GOLF it was a great success!

I hope you enjoy the following photos and if any one has others please send them through to me and I will add them to this blog.

Cheers, Jan
