John Owens Trophy final…my last post

A perfect day for a match play final. Peter Whittle & John Houston vs Andrew Tomkins and Russell Bourne. The match was close all round and it came down to the 18th green with a four foot down hill putt; with nerves of steel Andrew nailed the putt to win the match 1 Up.

Well done Russell and Andrew and commiserations to Peter and John. Well done to get to the finals and play the match in the true spirit of golf… lots of fun. See the photo below.

My Last Post…

As I am stepping down from the position of Captain at the AGM this Tuesday I would like to say it has been a privilege to hold this position for 3 years. It has been a rewarding role, albeit time consuming, working with Matt Morris and his team, Dad’s Army and our other Volunteers to keep continually improving our golf course for the enjoyment of all members and guests.

As with most things the job is never done and there is always more to be done. The bunkers need to be renovated, the 5th green needs a make over and the eight hole drain needs to be more “user friendly”. So I hand over to the next custodian, Peter Cottee who I believe will bring a new energy and member involvement to the role.

From a Board perspective I’m pleased to have worked with such a committed team of people over the four years as a Board member. The continual focus on improving the financial position of the Club; the focus on improving benefits to members and from my position as Captain supporting me and Matt on improving the golfing experience.

Being a Director of a Golf Club is not a position to be take lightly. Compliance to the standards and legislation overseen by Clubs NSW, Golf NSW and our own BGC Constitution means that tough and difficult situations need to be dealt with accordingly. It’s fair to say that the last six months has been a difficult time for the club; no one wanted this. To side step these issues we faced would have been outside the legislation and morally weak.

When Kevin Kenny went on sick leave on the 20th of November 2023 your Board immediately stepped in to run the club on a day to day basis. I congratulate Wayne Meadth for his dedication for four months of daily leadership; reinvigorating our staff, focussing in on improving returns from events, improving the club’s financial position and managing members requirements.

I worked closely with Kevin Kenny for 3 years and I hope and trust he has a prosperous and rewarding future.

Finally, I wish the new board all the very best and if I can assist in any way I’m more than happy to assist.

Best Regards,

Dave Burgess
